What is Flexographic Printing?

Flexographic printing, commonly referred to as “flexo printing” is a printing technique that provides optimal efficiency, flexibility, and consistency. At Holly Label Company, we use flexo printing to manufacture labels and tags. Our presses can produce large volumes fast and accurately. We are a reliable printing resource for companies in demanding sectors such as pharmaceutical, food, beverage, and retail industries. Because it is so versatile, flexo printing can be used to print designs and labels on various substrates including paper, film, BOPP film (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) and more.

How does Flexo Label Printing Work?

In flexographic printing, the starting material comes in the form of a roll, which passes through a series of flexible relief plates taped onto cylinders. A specialized cylinder called an anilox roller applies ink to the flexible plate, which then transfers the ink to the material being printed. A single plate is required for each individual printed color. Each unit of the press with a plate works in tandem to create the final printed product. Additional processes can also be integrated with printing– such as laminating, embossing or die-cutting – capable of completing the product in a single pass on the press, increasing production speed over other traditional printing methods.

The Advantages of Flexographic Printing

Holly Label Company’s flexographic printing ability for labels and tags is highly efficient and versatile, suitable for both small and large production runs. Our flexographic printing is also a cost-effective option, as it requires lower upfront costs for printing plates and time on press. The cost of labels also decreases significantly with large production runs, making flexo printing cost-effective for high-volume orders. Flexible printing plates are reusable, reducing waste and further lowering costs for future orders. Advances in flexographic technology have also significantly improved print quality, making it a great option for full-color printing and unique spot colors.

Digital Printing

The flexographic printing process at Holly Label Company is augmented with a digital output device, enabling us to produce consecutive numbering, bar coding, randomized numbering QR codes and versioning while a job runs on press. We utilize a hybrid system of digital and flexo printing, allowing for personalized, variable data applied to labels as they are run through the press. We can combine the benefits of digital and flexo printing with our finishing process for a cost-effective and sustainable solution for our customers’ labels.

Finishing

Once printing is completed on the press, the labels are sent to our finishing department, where slitting machines are used to cut large rolls of printed materials to their specified width. Depending on your packaging needs, printed labels and tags can be folded as well as sheeted to work with your products. The finished product is then sent to our customers to their precise specifications, so the product is ready to use as soon as it arrives.
